How to Use Stoves (Gas Stoves and Induction Cooktops) Safely

If you start living alone or in a dormitory in Japan, you will probably have more opportunities to cook your own meals. To cook, you need to use a stove (gas stove or induction stove). In this article, we will explain the basic usage of a stove and precautions to take to ensure safe use.

There Are Two Main Types of Stoves That Can Be Found in a Japanese Kitchen.

1. Gas Stove

  • This is a stove that uses gas to produce fire.

  • It produces a blue flame and you can adjust the intensity of the flame.

  • The fire is visible, so it's easy to adjust the heat level to what you need it to be.

2. IH Stove (Electric Stove)

  • Pots and pans are heated electrically without using fire.

  • The surface is as flat as glass.

  • Not compatible with some types of pots (requires induction compatible pot).

How To Use A Gas Stove

① Turn on the ventilation fan
Ventilate to prevent odors and gases from building up.

② Press and turn the knob
There will be a "click" sound and the fire will light.
